Instruction

Exercise (Week 1):

List down your 3 favourite graphic design composition work from Pinterest.

Explain it on your E-portfolio blog, why do you like the designs?

Lecture:

In this class, we were introduced to the fundamentals of digital photography and explored how science and art come together in design. We began by learning Photoshop, an essential tool widely used by designers and photographers. Photoshop plays a key role in the design process, especially for image editing and manipulation. Through the lessons, I also discovered many creative techniques I had never encountered before, which broadened my perspective and made me excited for future classes.

We also learned why Photoshop is such a valuable tool. It is not only powerful but also user-friendly, allowing us to bring our creative ideas to life. Whether it’s designing business cards, restoring old photos, or turning images into cartoon styles, Photoshop offers endless possibilities for visual expression.

The composition is particularly attractive: the picture extends from the car in the foreground to the Tokyo Tower in the distance, and the whole line of sight is naturally guided to explore the picture, which is very layered. The vertical composition also makes the whole picture look more like a picture in a movie.

The color is very comfortable: with blue as the main color, plus red and white embellishments, the whole atmosphere is both refreshing and a bit nostalgic. The sun shines on the car and the building, giving a feeling of a quiet summer afternoon.

The small details are very story-telling: Although the pixel style is simple, it is not simple. Cars, billboards, falling leaves, these elements together spell out a story that may be about the city, youth and travel, which makes people can't help but take a few more glances.

The lighting atmosphere is particularly charming: the yellow-orange light dyes the whole alley warm, full of life, and makes people feel a kind of quiet romance, just like the street scene in an old movie.

Strong sense of space: the cobblestone road extends to the distance, the whole alley is narrow and deep, and the progressive sense of space makes people want to walk in and see what is at the other end.

Details are full of life, whether it is the green plants on the windowsill or the small ornaments on the street, they make this old street look very real and humane. It is not a posed photo, but a place where people live and have stories.

The picture is very interesting: the whole building is like a stage, with different stories playing out on every floor and every window. The picture is lively but not messy, and people can't help but look at it carefully.

The color is very smart: blue is the main tone, calm and unified, and with the orange light, it has a sense of warmth in the city at night. The social icons fly out in colorful colors, instantly catching the eye.

The irony is strong: the icons of social platforms are "dumped" into trucks like garbage, which obviously alludes to our state of being overwhelmed by information. Although the style of the painting is cute, it is a reflection on the pace of modern life and information anxiety.

Exercise (Week 2):

Lecture :

In this lecture, I mainly learned the basics of composition, including the rule of thirds, the golden ratio, and how to use framing and cropping techniques in composition.

1. Basic Composition:
  • Focal Point
  • Scale & Hierarchy
  • Balance The Elements
  • White Space

2. Rules of Third

The rule of thirds is a compositional technique that divides an image into nine equal parts using two horizontal and two vertical lines. This creates four key intersection points that can be used to guide the placement of important elements in a design.

Positioning key subjects at these intersections helps achieve a more balanced and natural composition. For example, placing the horizon along the top or bottom horizontal line can make the image more visually appealing.

3. Golden Ratio

Figure1.1 Golden Ratio

The golden ratio represents a sense of beauty formed through harmony and proportion. Widely recognized for its artistic value in design, it follows a specific numerical ratio of 1 to 1.618.

Instruction:

   1. Choose and identify your collage's design elements to be cut out and compose it into your own concept & story.

   2. Pre compositing your collage's design elements into a composition.

   3. Take 3 photo of your collage pre-composition and insert it on the section below. Please use CAMSCANNER apps to take pictures of your collages.

PRE-COMPOSITION #1

This piece captures a quiet yet powerful moment—two women in flowing dresses poised between movement and memory. The bronze figure stands with quiet strength, while the lavender-clad one feels like a softer echo. Collaged leaves and musical notes inject rhythm and nature into the stillness, while the unfinished phrase “Why is the…” lingers like a suspended question. More than a reflection of the past, she emerges as a reimagined presence—an echo reclaimed, ready to speak in her own voice.

    PRE-COMPOSITION #2

This collage presents a bold interplay between elegance and urban edge. The central figure, stylish and confident, steps forward with dual shadows—suggesting complexity and duality of identity. Scattered eye fragments create a watchful, almost cinematic atmosphere, while the oversized gem and “I ♥ NY” patch infuse glamour and cultural commentary. Against a soft purple backdrop, the composition challenges conventions of femininity and power, celebrating the woman who chooses herself—sharp, seen, and unapologetically present.

      PRE-COMPOSITION #3

Bright, raw, and tactile, this collage feels like a blooming thought in motion. At the center, textured flowers burst from a vivid green backdrop—imperfect, alive, unapologetically organic. The cutout phrase “THE WAY” floats like a quiet manifesto, guiding the eye through scattered elements: a velvet orchid, citrus prints, flowing silhouettes. Each piece whispers of nature, intuition, and softness as strength. It’s not just a composition—it’s a direction, a feeling, a quiet revolution in full color.

        Reflection:

        Lecture:
This week’s lecture shifted my view of photography—from instinctive snapping to understanding it as a structured visual language. I discovered how elements like focal points and balanced composition guide the viewer’s eye and communicate ideas clearly. Learning about the Golden Ratio also deepened my appreciation for visual harmony.

        Practical:
The collage task was a fun and creative challenge. Cutting and rearranging magazine images sparked spontaneous ideas. Even when something felt off, each adjustment led to new discoveries. I realized that in art, even mistakes can guide you toward unexpected beauty.

        Exercise (Week 3):

        Lecture :

1.Gain a basic understanding of the Photoshop interface and learn essential functions like making selections and working with layers

        Figure1.1- Layer Interface

        2. Marquee Selection Tool

        Figure1.2- Select & Mask

        3. Lasso Tool
The Lasso Tool lets you freely select specific areas within a document. It offers three options: the standard Lasso, the Polygonal Lasso for straight-edged selections, and the Magnetic Lasso, which snaps to edges automatically.

        Figure1.3- Lasso Tool

        4.Pen Tool
The Pen Tool can be used in four main ways: to create straight paths, U-shaped curves, simple S-curves, and complex S-curves. We watched tutorial videos to learn how to use the tool and explored its practical applications.

Figure1.4- How to Use the Pen Tool

Figure1.5- Four ways to use a fountain pen tool

        5.Magic wand tool
The Magic Wand Tool, introduced alongside the Pen Tool, allows you to automatically select areas of an object with a single click. Adjusting the tolerance setting helps improve the accuracy of the selection.

        Reflection:

This week, we created three digital collages in Photoshop using downloaded images. I was initially unfamiliar with many of the tools, but after watching the tutorial, I became more confident using features like the selection tool, pen tool, and shape tool. This exercise helped me build a better understanding of digital composition and improved my Photoshop skills.
